Abstract

The article discusses three concepts supporting online learning: interaction, collaboration, and engagement. It aims to inform about the similarities and differences of these concepts through definition, description, and discussion of their characteristics in selected instructional activities. Further, the authors identify and discuss how these ideas intersect to provide a meaningful online learning experience. Also, the authors share sample activities demonstrating each concept in action. Finally, the article proposes to address the challenges and issues of using, embedding, or integrating these concepts in the online activities' design, development, and delivery.

Dr. Danilo M. Baylen, University of West Georgia

Danilo Madayag Baylen is an Instructional Technology, Media, and Design professor. He received degrees in Elementary Education, Library and Information Studies, and Counseling. Before his faculty position, he worked as an instructional designer, Instructional Technology Services director, and faculty developer in higher education institutions. He teaches, researches, and publishes technology integration practices, visual and media literacy skills, creativity, and collaboration. Dr. Baylen is one of the 2022-2023 Fulbright U.S. Scholars.

Dr. Ye Chen, University of West Georgia

Ye Chen is an assistant professor of Instructional Technology, Media, and Design at the University of West Georgia. Her teaching and research interests embrace the areas of makerspace teacher professional development, integration of emerging learning technology, preparing teachers for integrating technology, online learning, and learning analytics.

Dr. Allyson Wilcox, University of West Georgia

Allyson Wilcox is a lecturer at the University of West Georgia’s College of Education. Before her faculty position, she worked as a library director, a director of e-learning, and an associate director of online faculty development in various higher education settings. Her research focuses on improving the quality of online education and, in doing so, increasing access to education for everyone.
